Radio Norfolk’s Wally Webb was on site in Wymondham this morning with Matt Wood and our client Robert Hawkins, who is building a house for his family on a former builder’s yard next to Toll’s Meadow (pictured). The 4-minute piece went out live as part of Chris Goreham’s Breakfast Show, and follows the recent publication of our discussion paper ‘Self-Build Norfolk’.
The Tolls Meadow site is a classic self-build plot – former light-industrial land, just outside the development boundary and with difficult ground conditions. Mr Hawkins is a builder so he has plenty of experience, but the challenges of this site would be enough to deter most self-builders.
Matt explained how the government’s recent self-build initiative is intended to make easier sites more widely available, so that the percentage of self-built/self-commissioned new homes in the UK could rise from the current 10% towards the 40-50% which is more typical in western Europe.
