Lucas Hickman Smith’s Matt Wood gave a short talk last night for artists’ group Kiln, inspired by historian Nikolaus Pevsner’s controversial observation that Lincoln Cathedral is a work of architecture, whereas a humble bike-shed is merely a building.
Matt’s talk explored the difference of approach needed when designing large glamorous buildings such as art galleries (modern-day ‘cathedrals’) and more modest, ubiquitous buildings such as houses, and highlighted some similarities and differences between architecture and the other ‘fine’ arts.
